I’m on a bit of a roll with my sewing at the moment, so I thought I’d make some more cushions covers for my Ektorp sofa. I wasn’t happy with our square cushions because they seem to sag and get squashed when you leaned on them so I found myself constantly fluffing them. I had 3 lumber cushions that I wasn’t using so I sewed up some new shabby covers using spare fabric from my stash. All three covers I made cost zero to make and look great. Plus, they are super comfortable and provide excellent back support.
The first one I made from a white child size pillowcase I had spare. I love the feel of crisp white cotton. I just cut off one edge to make it the right width and sewed it up using an overlocking stitch. Then I cut some strips of fabric from the side fabric I cut off, folded and sewed them into ties and attached them to the end of the cover. I love tie up pillows.
Next I cut some canvas circles of differing sizes and sewed them into slightly ruffled flowers with button centres and attached them to the body of the cushion. Canvas fabric is also super soft and I love its neutral colour.
The next cushion I covered with canvas fabric and again attached ties to close the end.
I wanted the edge to look like it was covering a cushion insert that was striped, so I attached a flap and tucked it in over the insert at the back. This made a great faux effect.
The next cushion I used a tan striped upholstery fabric that I picked up brand new for $1 at a church fete.
I decided to emphasise the frayed edging by making it a feature on the front of the cushion. So I sewed the two edges together, warped in around the cushions and into an envelope closure. Lurve the fraying.
I used the striped fabric on the cushion flap of the previous cushion so they could match in together. I’m super happy with the results.
Not only were they free to make, they look pretty, and they are super comfortable. And because the inserts are relatively firm, I don’t need to do any fluffing. 🙂
I don’t think I’ll be going back to square cushions any time soon. 🙂
